5 THINGS TO REMEMBER REGARDING IFE for CLASS IX and X (WBBSE)
After attending a 5-day workshop held under the guidelines of The Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhijan( RMSA), I feel quite clear about the term IFE i,e Internal Formative Evaluation. This 5 days training was held at Chetla Boys School, Kolkata in the presence of the respected District Inspector of Schools,Kolkata and the Key Resource Persons were Mr. Bipul Chandra Eshore, Mr.Harinath Nanda, Mr. Srikanta Mondal, Mr.Prasenjit Ghosh, Mr.Tathagata Mukherjee .
However , I felt to write on it as I myself was under the misconception that IFE is like Project making and may be the English teachers who have not attended such training programmes are under the same misconception .
1.WHAT IS IFE
IFE or Internal Formative Evaluation is an extended Formative Evaluation which is followed upto Class VIII in the name of The Peacock Model. As the main objective of our education is holistic development of the student, formative evaluation is a necessity even for the students of class IX and X, for the teen agers who are facing new challenges , conceiving new ideas and preparing for a flight towards glorious youth.
2.OBJECTIVES of IFE in ELT
In ELT the objectives of IFE is to develop the four skills of language learning along with its holistic approach. The rubrics of the peacock model are-
QUESTIONING AND EXPERIMENTATION
INTERPRETATION AND APPLICATION
EMPATHY AND COOPERATION
AESTHETIC AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION
The teacher should apply her own way of evaluating all these points but she should also keep in her mind – how to develop the skills i,e Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking Skills while preparing questions for IFE.
3.HOW TO CARRY IFE
IFE should be carried strictly in the classroom.
IFE should be carried out for three times in an academic year.
Date of IFE should not be announced before.
The copies will be retained by the students duly signed by the subject teacher and the guardian and will have to produce at the school for any future requirement.
4.MODALITIES of IFE
Open Text Book Evaluation
5. HOW TO USE THESE MODALITIES or THE TOOLS
Any three of these six items will be chosen for an academic year.
Survey – it should be done from the text. Students will collect information and will be able to interpret or evaluate a situation analysing the collected information.
Nature Study—It is also text based evaluation. Questions should be prepared on nature-based texts and it would involve observation of different living beings, their activities etc as a mode of learning.
Case Study- A similar passage of the text will be given for intensive study. It inspires the students to examine its context, value , conflict and they will be able to answer understanding -based questions.
Creative writing- the topic for creative writing should be related to their knowledge gained from the text book.
Model Making- It is not at all the model making of the Craft class. It is pattern, chart etc making. It helps the students in their logical thinking and as well as problem -solving and decision making skill.
OTBE- An unseen text may be related to any of the pieces from the text wil be given.More Knowledge-based questions, objective questions along with some understanding-based questions will be followed. It helps the students to explore , interpret , deduce and infer ideas, information or events from the text.

MY EXPERIENCE :
As the new session is yet to start, I cannot share my classroom experience right now but my experience at the training programme was awesome. We ,the English teachers shared our class room experiences, problems and tried to find out the solutions as a team. The Key Resource Persons were very well-informed and warm. Some senior teachers from renowned schools helped us sharing their own teaching experiences. Dr. Amit kr Poddar , a senior ELT faculty was present there . He enriched us sharing his own experiences and making the objectives of ELT more elaborate and comprehensive.
